Translation~! Thank you for sharing the notes!
The serialization turned into a long one, just around 6 years long. I am truly thankful for how long you have read and followed this unskilled manga!
I barely have any recollection of the start of the serialization. I mean, it has been six years, and I basically was entirely swamped each week trying to complete the manuscript. Not a lot has stayed with me. It looks like my memory is not very reliable.
After I started getting more used to serialization, I began to see my own lack of skill once again, and in such a way, my inexpertness followed me all the way through to the end of the serialization. It was six years of writhing embarrassment combined with not wanting to lose.
I believe that “SKET Dance” is rather unusual among Shounen Jump’s various series. It’s plain, it started out slowly, and support from female readers is rather lacking, but even so, it slowly sold more and more. Without a single break, I was able to depict whatever content I wanted each week. I believe that this position suits my very well, and I really liked it. As long as I draw interesting things, the surveys will honestly reflect that, and the opposite is true as well. Every week, I am lifted up by the results, or I become depressed. If I think about it, this was truly a very fortunate piece of work.
That this manga was able to continue for such a long time is primarily thanks to the readers’ support and nothing else. You were always, always, always my spiritual support. Thank you so much!
I can’t thank the staff enough for allowing this unskilled author to continue with the best job ever. Thank you so much. I greatly enjoyed meeting everyone as an author through the magazine.
And I must also mention the editors and their continual support. I believe that it must be hard always having to deal weekly with this manga that was going to end in one chapter. We laughed a lot, talked a lot, and thought a lot. It was a very fulfilling serialization. Thank you so much.
Former chief editor Sasaki, present chief editor Heishi, and everyone from Jump’s editing department, my editor Tomiyama-san, and all of the staff and seiyuu for the anime, I was truly and really under your care. I really want to work with all of you again. Please take care of me from now on too.
In the middle of this grueling weekly serialization, I seriously thought, “After I finish, I’m going to rest and not do anything for around two years.” But now that I finished drawing the manuscript for the last chapter, I am already feeling antsy. What should I do for my next piece of work… No, no, I want to rest! Well, I would be happy if something came together as soon as possible for me.
Well then, until that day. Take care.
Thank you for reading!
SKET DANCE SELF LINER NOTES
Once I started wanting to depict the characters’ growth and began advancing the time in the story little by little, I thought that the last scene would be the graduation ceremony. If I could end it in such a way, that would be nice, and that was how I drew. Now, we have finally reached the end.
For a mangaka, there is no greater happiness than being able to successfully complete a work.
I decided that Bossun would go overseas at the same time as I decided that Himeko wanted to become a teacher. Somehow, I thought it was like Bossun to do something like that.
I have no idea what he will do after returning to Japan. Besides, thinking about it is such a drag, and after this, it is up to them what path they will each take.
Although the story ends here, I feel that the characters will always live on inside my heart, mysterious existences half with their own will. As the person who was the most helped by the Sket Dan, I always, always, want to continue to cheer them on.
